Nothing slows down a print order — or costs more in reprints — than a file that isn’t print-ready. This guide covers everything you need to know to send files that print perfectly the first time.
Resolution: The Most Common Mistake
Print requires a minimum of 300 DPI (dots per inch) at the final print size. Images that look sharp on screen at 72 DPI will print blurry. Always start with high-resolution source files. If you’re unsure, call us before ordering — we check every file before printing.
Color Mode: CMYK vs RGB
Screens display color in RGB (Red, Green, Blue). Printers use CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black). Always convert your files to CMYK before sending them to a printer. Colors can shift significantly when converting from RGB to CMYK — especially bright blues and oranges. We recommend proofing your colors before large runs.
Bleed and Safe Zone
Bleed is extra artwork that extends beyond the edge of your design. It exists because cutting isn’t perfectly precise — having 0.125″ of bleed on all sides ensures no white edges appear on your finished piece. Your safe zone (where important content like text and logos should stay) is 0.125″ inside the trim edge.
File Formats We Accept
We accept PDF (preferred), AI, EPS, PSD, TIFF, and InDesign IDML files. PDFs should be flattened with all fonts embedded. For best results, export as PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4.
Font and Text Guidelines
Minimum recommended font size for body text is 6pt. For reversed text (white on dark background), use at least 8pt. Always outline fonts in your final files, or embed them in your PDF export. Avoid hairline rules thinner than 0.25pt.
