Paper Makes the First Impression
When your client picks up your brochure or business card, the paper they’re holding is the first thing they feel. At PrintLocker in Los Angeles, we’ve helped thousands of businesses choose the perfect paper stock for every print project — and we want to share that knowledge with you.
Understanding Paper Weight
Paper weight is measured in pounds (lb) or grams per square meter (GSM). For business cards, you want a sturdy 16pt or 18pt card stock. Flyers typically use 100lb gloss or matte cover. Brochures look great on 100lb text weight, which folds cleanly without cracking.
Coated vs. Uncoated Paper
Coated paper has a glossy or matte finish applied to the surface, which makes colors pop and resists smudging. It’s ideal for marketing materials, postcards, and menus. Uncoated paper has a natural feel and takes ink differently — it’s great for letterhead, envelopes, and any materials meant to be written on.
Gloss, Matte, or Silk?
Gloss coating creates vivid, high-contrast prints with a shiny finish. Matte coating gives a sophisticated, non-reflective look that photographs exceptionally well. Silk (also called satin) is the middle ground — smooth and elegant with a soft sheen.
Specialty Finishes Available at PrintLocker
We offer several premium finishing options that can transform your print materials. Spot UV adds a glossy coating to specific areas for dramatic effect. Soft-touch lamination gives a velvety, luxurious feel. Foil stamping adds metallic accents that catch light and attention.
